What is a surgical robot?

Also called robot-assisted surgery, robotic surgery uses special a surgical robot to perform specific aspects of a surgical procedure - specifically, those requiring a high-degree of precision. In robotic surgery, the robot does not perform the surgery; instead, it’s used like an instrument and controlled by the physician. A surgical robot use very sophisticated computers and software, and because of their very high level of accuracy and precision, they’re associated with better outcomes compared to some types of “traditional” surgery.

What is laparoscopic surgery?

Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally-invasive surgical technique that uses a special instrument called a laparoscope to perform an array of procedures using very small incisions. A tiny camera mounted to the scope takes photos and videos from inside your body and transmits them to a monitor. Dr. Salsbury uses those images to guide the procedure.

Laparoscopy also can be used to diagnose the cause of symptoms including pelvic pain and irregular vaginal bleeding, and it can also be used to obtain tissue samples (biopsies) for lab evaluations.

Since robotic and laparoscopic surgery uses very small incisions, the recovery period usually is faster and more comfortable, and most patients can get back to their regular routines much more quickly. Plus, smaller incisions means there’s less risk of infection and other complications. In fact, the incisions are so small, they’re often closed with special surgical adhesives and covered with small bandages. 

Will I need to stay in the hospital?

That depends on the type of procedure performed, but in most cases, minimally-invasive gynecology surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis, which means you can return home the same day you have your procedure. You are provided with complete instructions on how to care for your incisions, what activities you can perform and which to avoid, and any other information you need to ensure a great recovery.
